Just around 2 hours, 30 minutes
The Bulletin
By Mark Morical
October 11, 2004
Uli Steidl and Trisha Rosenberg were content to spend a nice, relaxing weekend
together in Central Oregon — and each win a marathon during their stay.
On Sunday, Steidl was the top men's finisher in the inaugural Just Around the
Bend Marathon, finishing in 2 hours, 29 minutes and 59 seconds. Rosenberg, his
girlfriend,
was the fastest woman, finishing in 3:01:22.
Steidl and Rosenberg live in Shoreline, Wash., but they haven't had much time
together since Rosenberg became an assistant cross-country coach at the
University of
Portland this fall.
"Part of the reason we came here was so we could spend a weekend together,"
Steidl said, shortly after receiving a big hug from Rosenberg near the finish
line in Bend's
Drake Park.
The couple has come close in the past to each winning the same marathon. Steidl
won the Seattle Marathon five years in a row from 1999 to 2003, and Rosenberg
was the
second-place female two of those years.
"We finally both won," Rosenberg said. "I knew Uli could, but I had no idea
about myself. I just wanted to finish in the top three."
Steidl, 32, has also won the Vancouver (British Columbia) Marathon the last five
years. He was 19th at the New York Marathon in 2003.
Steidl's stiffest competition on Sunday came from Bend's Max King, who finished
second in 2:32:33 in his first ever marathon. The two runners were together in
front from the start until about the 19-mile mark, when Steidl began pulling
away. He continued to stretch his lead until the finish.
"Once I had a gap, I knew if I kept the pace I would have it," said Steidl, who
ran cross country and track for the University of Portland. "He (King) was
running strong. That's a good effort for his first marathon."
King said he was happy with his finish but started feeling the pain of 26.2
miles near the end of the race.
"My strategy was just to hang on to him (Steidl) as long as I could," King said.
"I made it to 20 miles. I felt really awful the last two miles. I felt like
walking. But I feel like
2:32 is good for this course."
It certainly wasn't an easy route. The course began in downtown Bend, taking
runners north on a scenic loop through Tumalo — with several daunting hills
between miles 12 and 18 — before finishing back in Bend at Drake Park.
"People talked about how hilly the Athens marathon course was," Steidl said,
"but I think this is definitely tougher."
King said he didn't mind the hills.
"I like that better than a flat course. It's nice to mix it up," said King, 24,
an avid triathlete who last month won his age group at the Xterra Off-Road
Triathlon USA
Championships.
Tim Julian of Ashland finished third in the marathon (2:36), and Steve Schaefer
of Silverton was fourth (2:37:31). Juan Martinez of Salem came in fifth
(2:50:19).
In the women's competition, Rosenberg, 27, led from start to finish, winning by
nearly five minutes over Kami Semick of Bend (3:06:05).
"I ran by myself a lot," Rosenberg said, "but that's OK. I like the hills, and
the course is absolutely beautiful."
Rosenberg finished eighth overall among men and women. A rower during her
college days at the University of Washington, Rosenberg has been a competitive
runner for
only four years. Fresh off her first marathon victory, she was convinced that
she could still improve.
"You're never really happy," Rosenberg said. "Once you do something, you want to
get faster. I'm happy with this, but I have a long way to go."
The 26.2 miles barely took a toll on Semick, an ultra-distance runner who is
accustomed to races of 50 or 100 miles. It was her first marathon in 10 years,
and she set a
personal record.
"This was short and fast," said Semick, 38, who was 11th overall among men and
women. "The course was awesome. There were tons of spectators and tons of people
cheering. You don't get that in ultra runs."
Andrea Loscalzo was the third woman to finish, recording a time of 3:09:44.
Jennifer Sventek of Bend was fourth (3:17:15) and Amy Petersen of Bend took
fifth (3:21:05).
Bambi Will, co-director of the Just Around the Bend Marathon, was thrilled with
the number of entrants for the first-year event. About 200 runners competed.
"This exceeded our expectations," Will said. "Being a new event, it's hard to
know how many people we would get."
A 10-kilometer event was also part of Sunday's race package. The 10K started in
downtown Bend and finished in Drake Park. Sean Nixon of Bend was the top runner,
finishing in 32:17. Michael Thompson of Wynantskill, N.Y., was second (37:39).
In the women's 10K competition, Colleen Pallari of Corvallis took first (40:34),
followed by
Teri Sheasby of Bend (41:02).
Steidl and Rosenberg said they will continue training for cross-country races,
adding that they will likely both compete in the Seattle Marathon again on Nov.
28. They train
together when they can.
Steidl said both he and Rosenberg were confident coming into the Just Around the
Bend Marathon, but Rosenberg had some nerves during registration.
"It's a fairly small race, and we thought we both had a shot at winning," Steidl
said. "Trisha was nervous when we registered. Somebody said there was going to
be some
national-class runners here. We wondered, ‘Are they talking about us, or other
people?' "
If they weren't talking about the winning marathon couple, they should have
been.
